Peopling of the Americas

The peopling of the Americas refers to the initial migration of humans from northeastern Asia into the Western Hemisphere during the Late Pleistocene. Once framed as a single, late event — big-game hunters crossing Beringia and walking south through an ice-free corridor (IFC) roughly 13,000 years ago — the field has shifted toward an earlier, coastal-first picture in which people moved along the Pacific Rim, possibly thousands of years before any inland route was viable. The timing, route(s), and number of migration waves remain actively debated.

The collapse of “Clovis First”

For much of the 20th century, the dominant model held that the Clovis culture (fluted-point technology, dated ~13.1–12.9 ka) represented the first Americans, who arrived via the ice-free corridor between the Cordilleran and Laurentide ice sheets. This narrative has effectively collapsed under pressure from two directions:

  1. Pre-Clovis archaeological sites. Monte Verde in southern Chile, dated to ~14.5 ka, predates Clovis by more than a millennium and sits ~16,000 km south of Beringia — implying people were in the Americas well before the corridor model allowed.12
  2. Geochronology of the corridor itself. Direct dating of the IFC shows it opened too late to explain the earliest sites (see below).

The ice-free corridor: when did it actually open?

The IFC was long assumed available by ~15 ka, but multiple independent dating programs have pushed its viability later:

  • Pedersen et al. (2016, Nature) used sedimentary ancient DNA and pollen from core samples along the corridor to show the IFC did not support a viable ecosystem (plants and animals capable of sustaining migrating humans) until ~12.6 kyr BP — too late to be the entry route for the earliest known populations.3
  • Clark et al. (2022, PNAS) dated the full opening of the corridor using 64 cosmogenic ¹⁰Be exposure ages, finding the last segment became ice-free at 13.8 ± 0.5 ka. Even the physical opening (before any ecosystem established) postdates the oldest accepted sites.4

Together these results effectively rule out the IFC as the route of first entry, though it likely served later movements — possibly including ancestors of some northern Indigenous groups moving both south and back north.

The coastal (Kelp Highway) hypothesis

The leading alternative is a maritime migration down the Pacific coast:

  • Erlandson et al. (2007) proposed the “Kelp Highway” hypothesis: productive kelp-forest ecosystems — stretching from Japan around the North Pacific Rim to Baja California — would have provided a rich, relatively uniform resource base (fish, shellfish, marine mammals, seabirds, kelp-bed game) supporting boat-using coastal migrants with no need to penetrate ice sheets.5
  • Lesnek et al. (2018, Science Advances) used beryllium-10 exposure dating on four islands in southeastern Alaska to show the Pacific coastal corridor was deglaciated and potentially habitable by ~17 ka, thousands of years before the IFC opened.6
  • Praetorius et al. (2023, PNAS) modeled ice, ocean, and climate conditions along the Pacific coast and identified two environmentally favorable windows for coastal migration: ~24.5–22 ka and ~16.4–14.8 ka, when winter sea ice was limited, ocean currents were manageable, and coastal productivity was high. The earlier window is provocative — it brackets the age claimed for the White Sands footprints (below).7

Key sites pushing dates earlier

  • White Sands footprints (New Mexico). Bennett et al. (2021, Science) dated human trackways at White Sands National Park to ~23–21 ka using radiocarbon-dated aquatic plant seeds interbedded with the tracks — the oldest direct evidence of humans in the Americas, if the dates hold. The dating remains contested (see debates below).8
  • Monte Verde (Chile). Dillehay et al. reported the MV-II occupation layer at ~14.5 ka (PLOS ONE 2015; Science 2008), with preserved wooden structures, medicinal plants, and seaweeds indicating a coastal-adapted economy. Long resisted, Monte Verde is now broadly accepted and was decisive in ending Clovis First.910
  • Calvert Island (British Columbia). McLaren et al. (2018, PLOS ONE) excavated 29 human footprints preserved in intertidal sediments, dated to ~13 ka, showing people were using boats along the British Columbia coast at the end of the last ice age — consistent with the coastal route.11

Open questions and debates

This is a fast-moving, genuinely unsettled area:

  • Are the White Sands dates reliable? Critics argue the dated Ruppia seeds can incorporate old (“reservoir”) carbon, potentially inflating ages. Independent corroboration (e.g., dating of pollen or optically stimulated luminescence) has been reported by the original team, but skepticism persists.
  • How early is “early”? Claims of pre-20-ka occupation (White Sands; also contested sites like Chiquihuite Cave, Mexico) are hotly disputed. The conservative consensus anchors secure human presence at ~15–16 ka; the aggressive reading pushes well past 20 ka.
  • One wave or several? Genomic data generally support a primary founding population diverging from Siberian ancestors during a Beringian standstill, but the number and timing of downstream movements — and whether coastal and later IFC migrants represent different waves — are unresolved.
  • Role of the IFC after ~13 ka. Once open, did it carry significant southward migration, or mostly enable bidirectional movement of already established populations?

Current state of knowledge

The field’s center of gravity has shifted to: (1) an initial coastal entry, likely before ~15 ka and possibly before the Last Glacial Maximum, along a kelp-supported Pacific route; (2) the ice-free corridor as a later, secondary artery; and (3) a recognition that most early coastal sites are now underwater due to post-glacial sea-level rise, so the archaeological record is inherently truncated. Expect further revisions as submerged-site archaeology and ancient genomics advance.
