Malthusianism

Malthusianism is the theory, originating with Thomas Robert Malthus’s 1798 An Essay on the Principle of Population, that population growth tends to outstrip the growth of subsistence resources, leading to periodic “checks” on population through famine, disease, war, or voluntary restraint. Malthus argued that while population grows geometrically, food production grows only arithmetically, creating an inescapable tension between human reproduction and material limits. 1

The Malthusian trap and its escapes

The Malthusian trap describes the pre-industrial condition in which any improvement in living standards was quickly eroded by population growth, returning most people to subsistence. Historical escape from the trap has occurred through:

  • The Agricultural/Neolithic Revolution: Shift from hunter-gatherer to settled agriculture (~10,000 BCE), which supported larger populations but also created new forms of hierarchy, disease, and labor discipline
  • The Industrial Revolution: Fossil fuel energy and mechanized production (~1800 CE) broke the energy constraint that had bound all previous societies, enabling sustained per-capita growth for the first time
  • The Green Revolution: Norman Borlaug’s high-yield crop varieties, synthetic fertilizers, and pesticides (~1940s–1970s) dramatically increased food production, averting predicted famines in South Asia and Mexico. Borlaug himself, in his 1970 Nobel Peace Prize lecture, warned that these gains were a temporary reprieve, not a permanent solution, unless population growth was also addressed. 2

Each escape was partial and temporary: they pushed back limits but did not abolish them. This pattern — technological escape followed by renewed constraint — is the core of the Malthusian argument’s persistence.

Carrying capacity

Carrying capacity is the ecological concept of the maximum population size that an environment can sustain indefinitely, given available resources and waste assimilation capacity. In human ecology, carrying capacity is complicated by:

  • Technology: It can expand effective carrying capacity (irrigation, fertilizers, energy) but often at the cost of degrading the resource base
  • Consumption inequality: Carrying capacity depends on per-capita consumption levels; a world of universal high-consumption lifestyles has a much lower human carrying capacity than one of subsistence
  • Trade: Regions can exceed local carrying capacity by importing resources, exporting waste, or both — effectively appropriating carrying capacity from elsewhere

The concept is central to limits-to-growth and degrowth: the question is not whether carrying capacity exists, but whether human societies can manage the transition to sustainability before overshooting it.

Neo-Malthusianism and its critics

Neo-Malthusianism applies Malthusian logic to modern concerns: population growth in the Global South, resource depletion, climate change, and biodiversity loss. It was influential in 20th-century environmentalism (Paul Ehrlich’s The Population Bomb, 1968) and continues in contemporary discussions of planetary boundaries.

Critics argue that Malthusianism:

  • Has been repeatedly falsified by technological escape (Borlaug’s Green Revolution being the canonical case)
  • Blames the poor for structural problems of distribution and consumption
  • Has historically justified coercive population control (eugenics, forced sterilization, one-child policies)
  • Ignores the demographic transition: fertility rates fall with development, education, and women’s rights, suggesting the “population problem” may self-correct

Defenders counter that each technological escape has been more costly and environmentally destructive than the last, and that the Green Revolution’s fertilizers and pesticides are now major sources of pollution, soil degradation, and greenhouse gas emissions. The question is not whether limits exist, but whether we can recognize and respond to them before overshoot.
