Rogue Scholar (Archetype)

The rogue scholar is Nathan’s self-chosen archetype, named in a 2024-05-18 journal entry: “a less fighty rogue with more magic and a passion for ancient and arcane knowledge.” It’s the identity that organizes the rest of the intellectual life — the scholar as adventurer, not academic; knowledge as something you go into the field (or the archive, or the dungeon) to retrieve. This page is mostly personal mythology, but it’s load-bearing mythology: it’s the self-image the grimoire itself is built in the shape of.¹

The thread in the journal

• 2023-03-18: “Ascendance of a Bookworm made me decide to really get serious about reading again.”
• 2023-08-23: the same series “increasingly feels less like a fantasy for book lovers, and more like a fantasy about bureaucracy” — the realization that the scholar’s real magic is records and systems, not spells.
• 2024-05-18: the archetype named — “rogue scholar: a less fighty rogue with more magic and a passion for ancient and arcane knowledge.”
• 2024-10-08: a Gandalf-as-Doctor-Who prequel-series idea — the wizard as the wandering scholar who shows up, learns the local problem, and moves on.

The lineage Nathan is drawing on: Indiana Jones (the professor who leaves the library), Gandalf (the wandering loremaster), the Bookworm heroine (knowledge as craft and bureaucracy), the Doctor (the traveler whose weapon is knowing things). The common structure: knowledge retrieved and applied in the world, not knowledge held in a department.

Why it matters to the wiki

The grimoire is the rogue scholar’s grimoire. Its characteristic moves are the archetype’s:

• Cross-domain serendipity (the SCHEMA’s stated goal) — the wizard walks between fields; the specialist stays in one tower.
• Raw sources archived, not just cited — the Bookworm bureaucracy: the record is the magic; a source you can’t re-read is a spell you can’t re-cast.
• Field retrieval over department consensus — the journal-mining that produced this page, the archive.org Teilhard runs, the Readwise excavation: the wiki grows by expeditions, not subscriptions.
• The fox on the cover — Inaba 🦊 is, not coincidentally, a rogue-scholar-class familiar.

It’s also, frankly, the archetype that makes the atonement imperative livable: if the question is “what have I done that atones,” the rogue scholar’s answer is “retrieved and kept the knowledge, and left the map.” suffering-axioms

Cross-domain connections

• gonzo-futurism — Pickard’s “idiosyncratic expertise” and immersive sense-making is the rogue scholar applied to futures work
• discontinuous-self — the archetype is one way of holding a discontinuous self together: the quest provides the narrative continuity the “I” doesn’t
• bunnie-huang — the closest thing the wiki has to a real-world rogue scholar: field work in Shenzhen, archive work in gongkai, hardware as arcane knowledge
