OODA Loop
A decision-making framework devised by US military strategist John Boyd. A rolling heuristic cycle for making quick decisions under pressure:
- Observe — gather information broadly, probe, keep records, notice incongruities
- Orient — construct a mental map of the situation, trust gut instincts, look for links and weak signals, blend new information with experience
- Decide — make decisions with incomplete information, optimize within visible constraints
- Act — prototype, beta-test, simulate; iterate based on results; know when not to act
The loop is “rolling” — after acting, you observe the results and cycle again. Speed of cycling through the OODA loop is itself a strategic advantage: getting inside the opponent’s decision cycle. 1
In Gonzo Futurism
justin-pickard adopts the OODA loop as the “cognitive aikido” of the gonzo futurist — a prosthetic framework for sense-making in VUCA environments. The gonzo futurist is an “OODA cyborg,” with observation stages resembling “vernacular, ad-hoc ethnography” and orientation stages emphasizing subjective pattern recognition over objectivity. 2
