Justin Pickard

Writer, researcher, and self-described “gonzo futurist.” Author of A Gonzo Futurist Manifesto (2012), which argued for an idiosyncratic, embodied, pattern-recognition-driven approach to navigating “post-normal times” — periods of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA). 1

Key Ideas

Pickard’s manifesto draws on cyberpunk literature (William Gibson, Bruce Sterling), military strategy (John Boyd’s ooda-loop), neuroscience (the amygdala as pattern-matcher), and futures studies (post-normal science, weak signal detection) to articulate a framework for sense-making and action in turbulent environments.
